Frequently asked questions about gabions

Gabions are becoming increasingly popular, both in gardening and in landscaping. These stone baskets are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly versatile. However, questions often arise regarding the installation, care, and maintenance of gabions. In this blog post, we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about gabions to provide you with a comprehensive overview.

1. What are gabions, and what are they used for?

Gabions are wire baskets filled with stones or other fill materials. They are often used to build retaining walls, privacy screens, or decorative accents in the garden. Thanks to their durability and flexibility, they are suitable for both residential and commercial use. Depending on their size and shape, gabions can be designed in a variety of ways and integrated into almost any landscape.

2. How long do gabions last?

Gabions

The durability of gabions depends on the quality of the materials used. High-quality gabions are made of sturdy wire with high tensile strength and corrosion-resistant coatings. Our gabions have a tensile strength of over 450 N/mm² and are regularly tested by independent laboratories. The salt spray test in accordance with DIN EN 150 9227 guarantees a resistance of over 3,000 hours (FAQ 12).

3. What sets your gabions apart from imported products?

The quality of our gabions is significantly higher than that of many imported products. In addition to greater customization and shear strength at the weld points, our gabions also offer increased tensile strength. The coating thickness is at least 275 g/m². This high quality ensures that you’ll enjoy your gabions for a long time (FAQ 12).

4. Can I cut my gabion mesh to size?

Yes, it is possible to cut the gabion mesh to size. However, you should make sure to use a cutting method that does not involve heat, so as not to damage the corrosion protection. The best method for cutting the mesh is to use a bolt cutter. When working with hot-dip galvanized mesh, the cut edges should be treated with zinc spray to ensure corrosion protection (FAQ 14).

5. How do I fill my raised garden bed properly?

Gabions

When filling a raised bed, you should proceed in layers. Our raised beds include an inner basket lined with geotextile fabric to prevent soil from washing into the stones. Make sure that large stones do not get into the inner area to prevent deformation. Alternate layers of soil and stones, and secure the geotextile to the mesh with cable ties to ensure stability (FAQ 11).

6. Can I exchange or return my gabion?

Gabions from our standard product line can be returned or exchanged without any problems. However, custom-made products cannot be exchanged (FAQ 16).

7. There are dark spots on the mesh of my gabion. What are they?

Dark spots on gabion mesh are often caused by soot and welding residues that can result from the manufacturing process. These spots are harmless and will disappear on their own after the first few rainstorms. White, powdery residues that are sometimes visible are also normal and will be washed away by the rain (FAQ 15).

8. What is the delivery time for hot-dip galvanized baskets?

The delivery time for hot-dip galvanized gabion baskets is about one week for standard sizes. If the baskets are custom-made for you, the delivery time can be up to 21 business days (FAQ 13).

9. What should I keep in mind when cutting gabions?

Gabions

If you want to cut your gabion mesh yourself, make sure not to use any heat-generating cutting methods, such as angle grinding or sawing. These methods can damage the corrosion protection. Instead, you should use bolt cutters, which mechanically cut the mesh while leaving the corrosion protection intact. For hot-dip galvanized mesh, it is advisable to treat the cut edges with zinc spray afterward to maintain the protection (FAQ 14).

10. What are the advantages of gabions over traditional walls?

Gabions offer numerous advantages over traditional walls. Not only are they easier and faster to install, but they are also more durable and offer greater design flexibility. Because they allow for the use of various fill materials, gabions can be customized to suit individual needs. They are also environmentally friendly, as they blend well into the natural surroundings and do not require concrete foundations.

11. Are gabions environmentally friendly?

Yes, gabions are environmentally friendly. Since they don’t require concrete foundations, they have a smaller ecological footprint than traditional walls. They also provide habitat for small animals and plants, thereby promoting biodiversity in your garden.

12. Can I install gabions myself?

Installing gabions is relatively simple and can be done without professional help. However, it is important to ensure that the ground is stable and level. For taller gabion walls, it may be advisable to use additional support posts to ensure stability.

13. How do I maintain gabions?

Gabions require very little maintenance. As a rule, it is sufficient to occasionally remove dirt and leaves from the baskets. If algae or moss accumulate on the stones over time, they can be easily removed with water and a brush. Thanks to their corrosion-resistant coating, our gabions are particularly durable and weather-resistant (FAQ 14) (FAQ 15).

14. Are gabions protected against rust?

Yes, our gabions are protected against rust thanks to their special galvanized coating. This coating provides effective protection against corrosion and ensures that the gabions will last a long time even under adverse weather conditions (FAQ 14).

15. What happens if the gabion mesh is damaged?

If the gabion mesh is damaged, this can compromise corrosion protection. Minor damage can be treated with zinc spray to restore the protection. For more extensive damage, we recommend replacing the affected mesh sections to ensure the stability and durability of the gabions (FAQ 14) (FAQ 15).

Conclusion

Gabions are an excellent choice for use in gardening and landscaping. They are not only versatile and durable, but also environmentally friendly and low-maintenance. Thanks to their versatility, they can be adapted to almost any setting and offer an aesthetically pleasing yet functional solution for walls, fences, and flower beds. We hope that the answers to these frequently asked questions have helped you decide on gabions.
